Following ancient traditions Khmer New Year arrives just after the harvest has been gathered and safely stored and before the rainy season starts.
This year we must celebrate Khmer New Year differently because we cannot mix or visit our home towns or temples here are a few ways you can celebrate the spirit of Khmer New Year and stay safe:
Day 1: dress up in fine clothes, light candles and burn incense thanking Buddha for his teachings by bowing to the ground 3 consecutive times. To bring good luck wash your face with holy water in the morning, your chest at noon and your feet just before going to bed.
Day 2: Help the poor or a charity and say a special dedication to your family’s ancestors (at home is fine).
Day 3: Wash your images of Buddha with a special mix of water and perfume (symbolising the washing away of evil deeds). Some people also wash themselves as it is thought to bring good luck, happiness and a long life.
This is also the time to talk to your family – especially parents and grandparents (phone or video link is ok)
Traditionally you would have visited family and friends, eaten delicious food and shown your respect at temples around the country – so because you may not be able to – we decided to bring the temple to you. From our team at QLM Cambodia we wish you a safe and special time for this unusual Khmer New Year of 2021.
